At first Venice seemed like a fun maze with fascinating, new things to see around each corner -- it might be a narrow pathway, a giant plaza, a view of shops and/or restaurants, a canal (usually a dead-end), a garden, or a famous landmark. But, I quickly found that as soon as you recognize a few landmarks (mainly San Marco Plaza, the Rialto bridge, the train station, and the bus station), there were signs guiding you down the main thoroughfares. And you could always choose to take a ferry if you were near the Grand Canal or on one of the islands. The maze part was fun, but it was reassuring to recognize there was actually some organization if you felt like getting to your destination and no longer exploring.
