Linz to Enns
It's not fun when you are used to a culture that has things closed on Sunday (or not at all) and you find yourself in culture shock (a little) when things aren't the same. It seems here in Austria things are typically closed on Monday. I was going to go to the ARS Electronica Center, but it was closed.
Then, I was thinking of biking to St. Florian to check out the huge abbey, but it started to rain. I might have been able to make the last tour of the day by the time I waited out the not-forecasted showers, but I decided it might be more interesting to check out the basillica in Enns. I was excited to view the Ancient Roman Temple underneath the basillica, but I arrived at the wrong time and would have to come back several hours later if I wanted to do that tour because it was the only one offered on Mondays.
So, I went early to the hotel I was staying at in Enns and then walked into the old part of the town. I went up the super-steep steps of the clock tower to look out over the oldest city in Austria -- it used to be a Celtic settlement Noricum and then a Roman settlement called Lauricum.
Then, for whatever reason I tried the Lucarium museum I thought was also closed on Mondays (either the internet or the guidebook I have said it was closed on Mondays) and the information office let me in. Like Passau, they had both relics from Roman times as well as from the Middle Ages.
I'm glad I was persistent because it turned out to be a pretty good day and I got to see a lot of cool historical junk (like Roman cowbells)!
Oh, and when the rain stopped, some interesting wildlife decided to come out along my travel route (20 miles or 32 km) as well.
