Every good story has to have some downs as well as ups, I suppose. I've tried to avoid complaining about the downs I experienced today by laying out these as curses and praises.
Curses
- Changing the signs you use to mark a trail and then having at least seven different trails converge with the one you want, is a good way to get lost on the wrong trail -- I did
- Zig-zagging so much you add a lot of distance to a trail is not a good idea (Google Maps lists walking distance between these two destinations as 63 miles or 101 km -- I did 80 miles, again!, or 130 km)
- River cyclepaths should try to provide scenic views of the river, or at least views of the river, or at least scenery -- this does not include sewage treatment plants unless you want to change your guide book to be sewage treatment plant cycle tour, which would stink, literally
- I know a great place to get tons and tons of horse manure -- this part of the trail! -- thank god I have my hep shots
- Hey, who hid those beautiful mountains I was used to seeing?
- Cyclepaths probably should not resemble steep mountainbike trails
Praises
- Cyclepaths probably should not resemble steep mountainbike trails
- The parts of the trail I was able to find were fun (see comment above)
- The weather was a tad chilly and often overcast, but it didn't rain nor snow
- I didn't realize my body could do this type of exercise and not feel too bad afterward
- There were friendly people everywhere, even in what would seem to be the-middle-of-nowhere type places and they helped give me directions and wanted to chat
- I found Happy Cherries!!! These are one of my favorite gummy candies and I can almost never find them in the US (and when I do they are stale -- yuck!)
I managed a few pictures along the way:
